Michelle Moir - Portrait Photographer
Photographing
people is my passion. I bring an innovative and creative
way of seeing to my portraiture - creating artworks
for your home.
My images capture shared moments forever - the magic of a child's spirit, the
wonder of motherhood, the joy of a wedding and the uniqueness of family life.
I have been a professional photographer for over 10
years. I studied full-time for six years at AUT and
Elam Art School at Auckland University, gaining a Diploma
in Graphic Design and a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree
majoring in photography. I graduated from Elam Art
School in 1992 as senior scholar.
During
my studies and for some years afterwards, I travelled
the breadth of New Zealand with two personal projects
of black and white portraiture, becoming the author
of two books -
"Images of Maori Women - Mataahua Wahine" and "New
Zealand Country Women"
both published by Tandem Press. My second book "New Zealand Country Women" was
listed in the Top 20 books for the NZ Listener Women's Book Festival in 1997.
Photoessays from these books have featured in NZ Geographic, Quote Unquote and Next magazine.
Today I work from my studio in Northcote, on Auckland's
North Shore as a portrait and wedding photographer.
I photograph in a relaxed, unobtrusive manner that
allows people to feel at ease in front of the camera,
giving my work a natural style and emotional edge.
As an artist I am always seeking to reveal a persons
true character through a perceptive portrait and to
create photographs that celebrate human diversity.
"Reviews"
"Where, oh where was Michelle Moir when I
had to have my photograph taken? She's one of the
few photographers who can be artistic and still capture
people with dignity and honesty."
Lena Erakovich, Sunday News
"Her concise portraits have a naturalness
and resonance which enable them to convey a way of
life at a glance."
North and South Magazine
"Michelle Moir is an artist who has spent
a decade looking closely at women. Her looking as
become a close knowing. Michelle has the talent to
recognise what makes people unique. She recognises
their ability to live their life as who they are
as whole person."
Ron Brownson, Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tamaki
